There was a time when we used to hear that nobody cares for the health of the poor people in India. As the largest democracy in the world, India needed a health care scheme that could ensure free health care support to all those who live below the poverty line.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi often mentions in his speeches ‘Sarkari Yojanayein Gareeb ke Liye Hota Hai’ (Government policies are always for poor people)

In 2015 NSSO (National Sample Survey Office) conducted a survey where it was found that over 80 percent of households were not covered by any Health care scheme. The poor were becoming poor day by day as they had to spend all their savings in hospitals. About 6 million families were sinking into poverty every year due to this.

But Thanks to our Prime Minister who calls himself the ‘Pradhan Sevak’ (Prime servant) of this country. Prime Minister Modi’s vision for the poor people became the inspiration for the creation of world’s largest free Health care scheme, Ayushman Bharat.

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana is also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) or National Health Protection Scheme or Modicare.

Sponsored by the central government, this scheme was launched on 23 September 2018. The sole motto of this scheme is to covering both preventive and pro-motive health, to address healthcare holistically.

The Modi government has prepared a list of families who will be eligible to get the benefits of ‘Ayushman Bharat’ Scheme on the basis of Socio-Economic Caste Census conducted in 2011.

About 10.74 crore poor households across India will be eligible to get up to Rs 5 lakh per year to fulfill their Hospitalization expenses. This scheme also provides support for pre- and post-hospitalization costs.

Within two months the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme has achieved great success. Till now Under this scheme, 15,972 Hospitals have been empaneled.

5,57,387 poor people suffering from health problems have been admitted to Hospitals under the MODICARE scheme. And till now 25,69,407 E-Health cards have been distributed across India. This is a great achievement for the Scheme just within 2 months.

In near future, the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ Scheme will help all the poor people who can’t afford high-cost medical facilities. It will help in making a new India that is healthy and worry-free.
